GLU transforms a pop classic into masterpiece with “Crush”

 


GLU’s “Crush” negotiates nostalgia with reinvention. loyal fans of Jennifer Paige, if the melody of “Let Me Love You” sounds vaguely familiar that is because it is. Shuman’s creative thumbprint makes this particular track live and breathe totally in his melodic universe. That openness at the heart of the original is still there, now cast in a dark and cinematic soundscape that manages to be as cozy as it is ambitious. Queens Of The Stone Age’s Michael Shuman presents his first new music since his EP "BOOGIE MAN" with a brooding cover of Jennifer Paige’s hit “Crush”. This new release, which also serves as his first under newly established FLG label, demonstrates Shuman’s startlingly modern and cinematic take on popular melodies.

“Crush” is likely remembered by many as a bright, late’90s pop gem, GLU’s rendition turns the track inside-out and places it into darker, more atmospheric territory while keeping almost all of its underlying emotion. From the opening notes, it’s evident that it aims not just to be a cover but an overhaul. Moody layers of instrumentation, textured bass lines, and subtly brooding production lend the track a modern edge, turning the song's yearning into a meditative experience that is almost hypnotic.
