Ruth Rothwell London-based jazz singer-songwriter,working under the name Empire Child, has released her debut single "Trace The Race," a thoughtful exploration of ancestry, migration, and belonging. Inspired by her Indo Jamaican mother and South African father, the song meditates on legacies of displacement, the generation and echoes of apartheid.
Anchored by reflective lyrics and textured, modern jazz instrumentation from Rene Rossano on guitar, Tomi Lujan on drums, and Victor Merlo on bass with Mariano Diaz producing, “Trace The Race” is out now. The song staggers in reflective elegance, sweeping us through a soundscape that reflects the intersections of heritage and identity.
“Trace The Race” is part personal reflection and part universal call to honor the beginning of things. It is reflective, lushly orchestrated and thick with emotional nuance, a forceful opening statement for a singer‐songwriter who navigates history, memory and musicality with rare acumen and sensitivity.
