Kid Camus is a San Francisco-based artist that is completely independent. They have carved out a niche in their own artistic space, creating a unique atmosphere with their music, which they call "All There Is???," a track that is part of the two-track EP "The Time I Left Hagåtña. "The single was released through the label antithesis of everything and feels less like a finished product than a moment captured, open, exposed, and human.
"All There Is???" contemplates the act of leaving home, not as a smooth exit but rather a fragmented and incomplete experience. The lo-fi texture of the track, live-room imperfections and confessional vocal delivery contribute to the documentary-style feeling, offering a personal touch as opposed to a performance.
Kid Camus's vocals are warm and gentle in the mix and convey uncertainty, contemplation and heaviness. There is security found in the softness, yet an equal amount of discomfort exists within the complete honesty. The production does not rush into providing answers; it allows for lingering with questions, allowing the listener to digest the remaining feelings from the experience of leaving.
The production embraces a minimalist approach; there is a lack of anything excessive, and therefore works in its favour. The lack of polishing between instruments allows for the emotional impact to be more pronounced and emphasises the belief that memory and distance can rarely be made tidy and resolved.
