If you ever imagined that The New Nostalgia was nothing but very politically-charged fire and depth in their lyrics, they had something cynical to say during the making of their latest single, "COW SONG," and to break your expectations over their knee like a nasty neighbor's racist garden gnome. With its distorted riffs from the word go, "COW SONG" barrels out of the gate like a runaway herd of noise, loose in the best possible way.
It still retains hints of the band's more conscientious origins; the seeds are undoubtedly still there, but this track makes the point: the mission here is chaos, joy, and pure, unapologetic fun. And somehow, it all works. Beautifully. The vocals bulldoze in hot, frantic, and a little unhinged, teetering on the brink of absurdity in a way that's utterly planned. You are being pulled up into a tornado of cowbells, grungy riffs, and wide-eyed energy. There's something refreshingly unbothered about "COW SONG." It's not attempting to win over the radio. It's not competing for your playlist algorithm.
You can tell the band is having a ball, and good for them. "COW SONG" is for everybody, and that's what it's designed to do. It's a rallying cry for everyone who relishes music that's wild, a little sweaty, and unapologetically off-kilter. The New Nostalgia is a reminder that sometimes the best, most punk thing you can do is stop trying to say something meaningful and just let the freak flag fly. The New Nostalgia is at least letting their freakier side do some wild driving.
