Aunty Social turns nine-to-five fatigue into indie-leaning pop gold on new release "Crack A Deal"

Aunty Social offers a frank window into her old desk-job life on the new single “Crack A Deal,” a left-field pop cut that is as personal as it is universal. Taken from her equally fittingly named debut EP The Day My Brain Broke, the single articulates the silent stir of living a life that society tells you is right on paper but feels absolutely wrong in practice. Constructed from a minimal but striking arrangement, “Crack A Deal” excels in its restraint. Rich but reined-in synths waft over interestingly off-kilter beats, creating a sound world that echoes the numbness of corporate routine.

It unwinds in an inattentive, nonchalant fashion, setting the scene with the I really don’t want to be here energy that so many 9-to-5 workers carry. It’s understated, oddball, and emotionally specific, the message is never hammered home, the mood does most of the work. At its heart, the trackis a prayer, or as Aunty Social describes it, a prayer to the 9 to 5 gods begging them to give me a break. That line alone defines the song’s emotional core, the push and pull between consistency and fulfillment. Gitto reflects on a path that had been expected and promising, a high-paying office job, college nearly done, but that ultimately didn’t seem to align with her desires.

Opting to abandon her studies and instead work full-time just so she could afford to make music has its own burden, and “Crack A Deal” is probably the moment when it all comes out. Instead of glorifying the fight, Aunty Social details it honestly and with humour. “Crack A Deal” doesn’t just tell the story of a career shift, it details the mental friction that comes with choosing yourself when the world expects something different, and turns that quiet revolution into something beautifully listenable.
